Blog Desert Archetype #7

Is There Really Any Hope

Treading through the scorched wasteland,
I have no other companion
Only God can deliver me from such a wretched fate
I call upon his name waiting for an answer
Where are you oh great powerful Lord
Your child is bruised and seeks life
In the far distance, a glimmer of green shines like a star
And I run, and run, and run, and run
Thinking, oh what a merciful father I have in the sky
And I run, and run, and run, and run
But the glimmer disappears and all that is left is an ocean of gold
How can this happen to such a virtuous creature
Is there no end to which she consumes all
She creeps on me slowly before nightfall
I stop and pray, and pray, and pray
My knees burning on the flame
They crumble like the ashes around
Close your eyes, for it is done
Your fate, is sealed
Just...Yield

The poem embodies the feelings of hopelessness, arduity, and death all in one piece. It is about a person who had embarked on a journey in the desert and finds himself lost and without resources, or people to help him. As he treads through the hellish sand he asks for divine help, which momentarily appears to aid him but immediately fades into nothing. This creates a shift in the tone that leads to the exposure of death as a theme in the poem. I created the poem in an attempt to wrap up the archetype into one piece that represents all of the different characteristics of the desert.
